TRI/TRE

Sharing knowledge, skills and experience is one of the most satisfying aspects of a flying career. In the military I was allowed access to the Instructor Academy to become a Flight Instructor and, having subsequently fulfilled all kinds of instruction- and teaching roles, I ended up as acting Head of Helicopter Training. Needless to say that I was thrilled to be asked to become a Type Rating Instructor/Examiner (TRI/TRE) on the AW139, when I was hired by one of the leading Offshore Helicopter Operators in the world. Not only does this additional role provides me with a diversity between the actual offshore operations and the ‘training side of the house’, it also continues to give me the opportunity to learn from trainees/candidates while assisting them to improve themselves.
A TRE is allowed to conduct Proficiency Checks and Skill Tests to issue, revalidate or renew Type- and Instrument ratings on the specific type.

The Authority appoints Senior Examiners and since 2016 I fulfil this role for the Dutch Aviation Authority. Some privileges/authorizations of a Senior Examiner are:

  • Conduct Assessments of Competence for the issue, revalidation and renewal of examiner certificates.
  • Contribute to the standardization of proficiency checks and skill tests.
  • Contribute to ensure quality of proficiency checks and skill tests.
  • Provide support for duties concerning exams and tests.

A CAA-NL Senior Examiner is automatically member of the Standardization Committee Helicopters. These are all aviation professionals that will discuss day-to-day problems during their meetings. Issues can vary from improper functioning Training Organizations, complaints or problems or questions about (change of) regulations.
Because of this exposure to many of these issues, I may be able to answer your questions about aviation related subjects, or, due to the acquaintance with many other professionals in various branches, I can help you find these answers. Because I am not restricted to a certain helicopter-type, I might be able to conduct your Assessment of Competence as well.
